The Volta Lofts is a 19-unit boutique soft loft development located on Annette St in the Bloor West Village neighbourhood. Only completed in 2014, this 5-storey limestone and brick mid-rise holds suites ranging in size from 812 to 1313 square feet and houses a pair of retail spaces on the ground floor. Some concerns about the location include the seeming lack of parking mentioned anywhere in publication and the fact that any of the layouts beyond one bedroom leave the additional rooms in the dark. That is to say, none besides the main bedroom benefits from natural light.
Named for the inventor of the Electric Battery Allesandro Volta, the building was once home to the TTC’s Beresford Substation responsible for powering trolleys on Annette Avenue. To go along with the theme the name invokes, one standout feature is the solar panels the building has aimed at energy efficiency, alongside the similarly efficient insulated concrete forms, stainless steel appliances and home automation system offered as standard.
Annette Street in this neighbourhood is truly underrated. The neighbourhood is fairly tight-knit and filled with people who look at each other instead of the sidewalk as they move through their day. Gourmet food, baked-daily pies, local pizza and amazing fresh Mexican food are all just a stones throw away. Proximity to High Park and the conveniences of the Bloor West retail strip aren’t too shabby either. If your budget doesn’t allow the hefty price tag of a house in this area, Volta may be a solution you’re looking for.
What We LOVE: Full disclosure: we use to live in a house not far from here and we loved it. Annette is a new hot spot for retail, and after years of being on the fringe the Junction is finally coming into its own (there are three breweries now!).
What We Don’t: This is still a squarely a residential house neighbourhood, which is actually a positive if what you’re looking is a quieter residential hood without the hassles of home maintenance. If you want to be next to your favourite bar, get a studio in King West.
