Welcome to Toronto’s Summerhill neighbourhood!
Summerhill is an area of Toronto known for its beautiful Victorian and Edwardian style homes, winding streets, greenery, and local parks. Located just shy of St.Clair & Yonge, and just north of Rosedale, Summerhill is a relatively central Toronto neighbourhood with easy access to transit and is buzzing with local hot spots.
‘Summerhill’ derives its name from the home formerly known as ‘Summer Hill’, the primary settlement of the area, owned by the Thompson family. The land was later divided, among heirs of the family, in the 1800s.
The introduction of the Canadian Pacific Railway Station helped shape the overall planning and feel of Summerhill as the neighbourhood adjusted to grow around the railway. In the following years, the area underwent very little growth, that is, until the introduction of Summerhill Subway station in the 1900s.
The Summerhill subway station acted as a stepping-stone for reinvention and growth as more people flocked to the area. Today, the old railway station is an LCBO – an easy (and well-liked) landmark for any Torontonian to get behind (insert applause)!
While local residents enjoy the pleasant views of well-kept homes, manicured lawns, walking trails, ravines, and historical flavour within residential Summerhill, Yonge Street, where local businesses flourish, and Summerhill TTC station are never far away. Summerhill & Yonge is host to an enviable collection of cafes, restaurants, butchers, patisseries, salons, juicers, clothing boutiques, and beauty bars.
Local hotspots include (but aren’t limited to): The Quail & Firkin pub, The Rebel House, Boxcar Social, Booboo & Lefty Fine Living, Sorrel restaurant, The Rosedale Diner, Terroni Bar Centrale, and many more.
In short, Summerhill is an upscale Toronto neighbourhood that encompasses a handful of things that make this a great city to live in: quiet residential tree-lined streets, local parks, accessible transit, and walkability to excellent restaurants, bars, and cafes.
The neighbourhood continues to age gracefully and is a low-risk investment as far as neighbourhoods go.

Your Typical Neighbour
Your typical Summerhill neighbor is not unlike your typical Rosedale neighbor. After all, the two areas essentially blend seamlessly into one. A neighbor in Summerhill is likely well heeled (well dressed maybe, even!?), educated, well-travelled, successful or (truthfully) “old money”. Demographics in this area range, but there are a large majority of families as well as older couples – who have often watched their families grow, move out, and have families of their own.
What We Love
We like so many thing about Summerhill! First of all: location, location, location. Proximity to transit, via the Yonge subway line, puts residents in the heart of Toronto. High walkability, beautiful running trails, biking routes, and ravines, coupled with excellent local hotspots and gorgeous homes, make this a coveted area for many.
What We Don’t Love
Summerhill an old-school neighbourhood, full of traditional homes and well-manicured lawns, with the downside being that it can feel, for some, a little ‘uptight’. Homes here are not cheap and prices continue to rise. This also places economic diversity at a bit of a standstill. But if these things don’t ‘irk you’ then we say go for it – Summerhill is a neighbourhood that will withstand the tests of time.

Ahhh! A breath of fresh air! At every turn, there is beauty in Summerhill. It is rare, if impossible, to spot a home that feels like an eyesore. Why? Summerhill homes are generally turn-of-the-century, Edwardian & Victorian style character homes built by hand, brick by brick, and lived in with extreme pride of ownership. Homes sit on generous, and often deep, lots that offer residents ample opportunity to display their green thumb and enjoy the warmer months. Homes here are expensive, but of course, oh-so-worth-it. With a transit score of 85 residents of Summerhill have excellent public transportation options. The Line 1 subway line at Summerhill Station will get you downtown Toronto in under 10 minutes. Bus lines 26 and 97 heading down Yonge will also lead to the downtown core. For commuters, Lakeshore can be accessed from Yonge Street and the Gardiner from York Street.
